A fun story about a girl, her cat, and grandpa and the underwater adventure they go on. I am so happy to see more illustrations by Janet Lee!

So Trot is a surfer that hangs out at the beach everyday after school while her grandfather, who is surfing from dementia, watches her.

That caught my attention. Then this story kind of took a weird turn. One day her grandfather goes missing but is later found pretty quickly.

This causes Trot's mom though to forbid them from hanging out the beach all day anymore. They are to only stay in the house.

Trot can't believe this is happening to her so one day, when she sees her grandfather is sleeping So Trot is a surfer that hangs out at the beach everyday after school while her grandfather, who is surfing from dementia, watches her.

Trot can't believe this is happening to her so one day, when she sees her grandfather is sleeping she decides to sneak out of the house and go surfing with her cat anyway.

This is where the story takes a sharp turn that I did not expect it to take. There is a bad storm her and Trot sink to the bottom of the ocean where they are saved by some Sirens.

To be honest, this isn't that unusual of a story. How many times do kids enter a closet or a different realm only to discover a world that they didn't know existed?

For some reason in this book though it felt completely abrupt and sudden and took me by surprise. The adventure itself is very straight forward and doesn't really build any type of suspense.

The plot is definitely extremely simple. I appreciate the sentiment that many of our differences can be resolved if we quit seeing everyone who is not like us as the enemy.

Useful universal message. I would classify this as more lower-middle grade. This is a perfectly fine graphic novel aimed at kids, but I found it a bit bland.

The art is bright and attractive, though I felt like it could do better at depicting dynamic scenes of movement and action, and I dislike how the faces tend to have a bit of a caricature style to them, with just-slightly-too-exaggerated features.

The plot is quite basic. The cat was a lot less likeable when it could talk supposedly it was just that Trot was given the ability to understand the cat, but the cats This is a perfectly fine graphic novel aimed at kids, but I found it a bit bland.

The cat was a lot less likeable when it could talk supposedly it was just that Trot was given the ability to understand the cat, but the cats apparent personality while talking vs.

The underwater kingdom is full of apparently intelligent fish that serve the mermaid queen, and yet they also eat fish at their meals.

Once the characters can magically breathe, being underwater is exactly like being on land, except they can float. Jul 29, Samantha W. This was a quick read, and cute.

I liked the characters, the adventure and development of them, and the cat of course. Jul 13, Autumn Byrd rated it liked it Shelves: comic-graphic-novels , middle-grade , magic , my-library , mythology , mermaids.

Frank Baums underwater Wizard of Oz. It weaves Vietnamese mythology, fantastical ocean creatures, and a deep-sea setting. To Trot, life has always been about riding the waves and taking care of her grandfather.

When Trots grandfather reappears after disappearing, Trots mother loses her temper and grounds them both. Deciding that being grounded Other creators involved in the making of this graphic novel include: Lettering by Jimmy Gownley This graphic novel was inspired by The Sea Fairies, L.

However, it only takes one giant wave for every thing to go wrong. With the Sirens and the Snakes at war, how will they ever get back home now? Both of them love surfing, but when they get caught up in the delight of surfing, things seem to start falling apart.

I really liked this graphic novel! However, the opening dedication clues readers in that Trot was originally a character created by L.

Frank Baum in the Land of Oz. Without familiarity with this character, it was good to have a full introduction to her personality through the first few scenes.

This graphic novel drew my attention because it features a Vietnamese-American girl, an animal companion who likes surfing and has one-eye, a surfer-protagonist, a single mother family dynamic my heart!

To top it off, the California beach setting and underwater adventures are perfect for a summer read. Now into the good stuff!

The biggest thing for me reading this book was the family dynamic. As a reader, I love books that have diverse family dynamics or strong family bonds.

While this graphic novel does show two single mother household dynamics, this book is very grandfather-granddaughter relationship focused.

And I loved this! Being someone who was very close to her great-grandfather, this book hit very close to home. The plot for this graphic novel is very straight forward with very little suspense, twists or turns, and our protagonists get out of bad situations with very little, if not none, consequences.

Even though these elements have been removed, this graphic novel does deliver on an adventure and some action.

We do get some fighting scenes and even a secret rescue mission that nearly leads into war. I definitely would have preferred more complexity to the characters and the entire situation, but overall, I think younger readers will definitely get swept up in the story and the characters, themselves.

And can I take a moment to talk about the illustrations?! For myself, I loved the art style. I loved the color pallet and the use of color tones. However, I will openly admit that this is not going to be an art style for everyone.

Most of this book does take place underwater and there is a realistic side to the dark and bright parts, but it definitely could have used more elements to make it feel like the characters were underwater.

Aside from all of this, I think the two messages near the end are really great messages to pass on to younger readers. The first one is really obvious; Recycle, Reuse.

I think both of these message will have a positive influence on our younger readers who pick this book up. Overall, this was a diverse, fun, quick read.

I definitely think this is going to be a graphic novel a lot of younger readers will enjoy. The ending does leave things open enough for a second book so if you did enjoy this book then keep your eyes peeled.

While she's riding the waves with her one-eyed cat, Cap'n Bill, her grandfather spends his time fishing on a nearby pier.

Trot's grandfather is in the early stages of dementia. Sometimes his mind wanders off. Sometimes, he does.

That's exactly what happens on one excursion, to which the police have to get involved. As a result both Trot, and Cap'n Bill are forbidden by the girl's mother to continue surfing when she should be watching her Trot is a young Vietnamese American girl who loves to surf.

As a result both Trot, and Cap'n Bill are forbidden by the girl's mother to continue surfing when she should be watching her grandfather at home instead.

But, those waves! They are just crying to be ridden! So while her grandfather sleeps, Trot and her cat sneak out for another round of surfing.

Only the waves are really choppy this time around and the pair find themselves in trouble having wiped out on a massive wave. The wipeout whisks Trot and Cap'n Bill to a magical underwater mermaid kingdom.

Quickly losing air, the sirens bless the surfers with the ability to breathe underwater and allow Bill to talk human! It appears that Trot and her pet have discovered a saltwater Utopia.

But anything is anything but perfect as Trot and Cap'n Bill find themselves stuck in the middle of an epic battle between merpeople and sea serpents- with Trot's grandfather a hostage of the kingdom of water snakes!

Sea Sirens was a nearly perfect pearl of a book. The illustrator has an amazing knack for making characters and creatures look magical while still appearing realistic.

As for the story itself, I also quite enjoyed it. The Red Sonja writer peppers in dialogue in Vietnamese throughout this book.

That makes sense as the main characters are from that nation. But Sea Sirens suffers from an ailment that is the biggest reason why I hate the movie Stargate!

Without some sort of subtitles, I feel like I am missing out on some very important aspects of the plot. True, with Stargate, the viewer was supposed to be as lost as the modern day scientists who cannot speak the dialects of the alien races that encounter.

But for the most part, the Vietnamese dialogue is between Trot and either her grandfather or mother. So, it really does not make sense to not let the reader in on those conversations.

Mythologers say that they were little birds with women's faces who beguiled sailors as they passed by, bewitching with lewd songs the hearing of those harkening to them.

And the song of pleasure has no good consequence, only death. But the truth of the matter is this, that there are narrow straits in the sea created by certain mountains in which the compressed rush of water sends up a sort of melodious lilt; when those who sail by hear it, they trust their lives to the rushing water and perish, with crews and ships.

At the bank of the Rhine River, near Sankt Goarshausan, Germany lies the Lorelei Rock, named after a legendary maiden who cast herself into the sea after she discovered that her lover was unfaithful.

She became a siren who lured sailors to their deaths on the rocks through her beauty. The area by the Lorelei Rock produces a constant echoing sound, and for many centuries this was attributed to the mournful cries of the young maiden Lorelei.

They were seals who came from the ocean onto land and shed their seal skin, becoming beautiful women. They were very family-oriented and were discouraged from wandering away from their seal families.

They sometimes married human men, however, and made good, faithful wives. Selkies would usually grow tired of life on land and would return to the sea, usually leaving while their husbands were away at work.

Some husbands tried to prevent their selkie wives from returning home by withholding the magical talismans the selkies required in order to regrow their seal skin.

In most of these stories, however, the wives found the hidden talismans and left their husbands. The Yawk-Yawk are water spirits in the Australian Aboriginal tradition.
